Ferry Tale
Some traditions never die in the valley. In Mission, Texas, commuters can still cross the Rio Grande by a hand-pulled ferry.

The last hand-pulled ferry barge in Texas still makes trips seven days a week across the Rio Grande River.

Hand-pulled ferry barge?

The Los Ebanos Ferry has been transporting passengers and cargo between Mission and Los Ebanos, Mexico, since 1950. Four men operate the flatbed boat by pulling it along a system of ropes connected to several ebony trees.

The barge can transport up to three cars and several pedestrians at one time. The ferry ride costs 25 cents, and many passengers choose to help pull the ferry as part of the unusual experience.
