A Seedy Story
Clark County, Wash., had its first apple harvest in 1830. One tree, one apple.
The Old Apple Tree was planted in 1826 near Fort Vancouver, and today it is known as the oldest apple tree in the Northwest. It is perceived as the matriarch of Washington state’s apple industry.
The tree actually began from seeds that an English lady gave to Emilius Simpson, cousin of Hudson’s Bay Gov. Sir George Simpson. The seeds came from the lady’s dessert apple, and she asked Emilius Simpson to plant them at Fort Vancouver.
The tree, now 181 years old, is celebrated with a festival held each year on the first Saturday in October, where cuttings are given away. |
