Barq's Bite
Barq’s root beer was created in Biloxi, Miss., and remains a top beverage of choice on the coast.

Sonny Barq’s grandfather brought a top-secret formula with him when he immigrated to Biloxi, Miss., in the late 1800s.

It was the formula for Barq’s Root Beer, a drink that "caught the imagination of the general public" in the early 1900s, says Edward "Sonny" Barq IV, grandson of company founder Edward Barq Sr.

"At one time, Barq’s root beer was created and bottled right here in Biloxi," Sonny Barq says.

The original factory, known as the Biloxi Artesian Company, was built in 1898 and still is standing on Keller Avenue. "Plans are under way to preserve the building and make it a museum," Barq says.

The business remained in the family until 1976, when it was sold to entrepreneurs. Coca-Cola bought the company in 1995 and now distributes the drink worldwide.
