Dining

Pass the napkins, please. You can get a fried double bologna burger, or try a pig sandwich, green chili slopper or coffee potato ice cream. Wash everything down with a white birch beer from the Hall of Foam.

Oddities

Time out: A Division I college football game actually had a final score of 222-0. Also, somebody had to invent Mother’s Day, and a city called Skullbone got its name from hosting bare-knuckle boxing matches.

Festivals

What’s that smell? Be sure to attend a celebration that features outhouse races, then bring a breath mint to the annual Garlic Festival. In addition, applaud the lucky and deserving winner of the Slug Queen Pageant.

Hall of Foam
Visiting Dr. Rootbeer’s Hall of Foam in Snead’s Ferry, N.C., is a little like revisiting your childhood.

And that’s just what Jerome Gundrum (a.k.a. Dr. Rootbeer) had in mind when he opened the museum/restaurant in 2004. The “doctor” has about 4,000 objects in his collection, including everything from signs to mugs, bottles and barrels. He serves his own personal recipe root beer, as well as lime rickey, white birch beer, cream soda and sarsaparilla.

“For our neighbors and out-of-town people, we are an attraction – a fun place to eat and drink,” he says. “We’re a place to relive root-beer memories or make new ones with the kids.”
