Great Outhouse Blowout
Penn’s Store in Gravel Switch, Ky., is famous for an odd event it has held since 1992.

It has hosted the Great Outhouse Blowout to celebrate the installation of the store’s first toilet: a privy. The blowout became an annual festival and includes the Outhouse 300 Race.

Now, one weekend each fall, competitors mount uniquely designed outhouses on rickshaw-type contraptions and race them. Winners have included “The Jolly Johns” and “The Golden Thrones.”
