The Mother Behind Mother's Day
The originator of Mother’s Day hailed from Henderson County, Ky.

Mary Towles Sasseen was born in Henderson County in 1860 and advocated a holiday to celebrate motherhood. Her first public observance of Mother’s Day was at Center Street School in 1887.

Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia continued where Sasseen left off, working full-time to convince legislators to support the holiday. In 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a Joint Resolution, and President Woodrow Wilson signed it, making Mother’s Day a national holiday.
