Used to Be Sherb's
All you can eat for 10 cents.
That was the sign appearing in the window of Sherb’s, a small ice cream shop that opened Aug. 4, 1938, on South West Avenue in Kankakee, Ill. This opening-day ice cream offer was especially incredible because it occurred in the days of the Great Depression.
Store owner Dick “Sherb” Noble provided his semi-frozen, soft-serve dairy product for 1,600 customers during the first day of business, and his idea would evolve into a multi-million dollar company. He eventually changed the name of his store to Dairy Queen, and today there are more than 5,000 Dairy Queen stores in the United States, Canada and 14 other countries. |
